The space

Why did this ice cream shop need an upgrade?

Ice cream belongs in a cold case. The heat given off by refrigeration equipment, however, was making Wally’s small space harder to keep comfortable. The owner told us the old air-conditioning system was no longer working well for the shop’s needs.

In Newton’s Auburndale village, this project was about the everyday experience of running a small business: a comfortable place for staff to work and customers to enjoy a treat.

Another business owner mentioned Mass Save®. Wally’s owner explored the program and contractor options with ChatGPT, found Advanced Ductless, and reached out. Our next step was to visit the shop and understand the space.

A plan the owner could picture

What could the owner see before installation?

We came to the shop for an estimate, took measurements, calculated the heat load, and scanned the space. Those steps informed the design we presented to the owner in a 3D model.

Seeing the proposed installation made the conversation concrete. The owner could understand how the system would fit into the business before installation day.

First time, Vinny came by and showed me how it would look. It ended up looking exactly like that.

The owner’s comparison says it well: the finished work looked like the plan.

Less cash tied up in the upgrade

How does the rebate advance help business owners?

We submitted Wally’s pre-approval application and followed up with the Mass Save® rebate processing team. The project received pre-approval promptly, before installation.

The Advanced Ductless rebate advance

The approved rebate comes off your project price first.

After pre-approval, Advanced Ductless deducts the approved rebate amount from the total project cost. The remaining balance can go through financing, subject to approval and the applicable terms.

  1. 1. Secure rebate pre-approval.
  2. 2. Deduct the approved rebate from the project cost.
  3. 3. Apply to finance the remaining balance.

For an owner managing inventory, payroll, and other business expenses, that means the rebate portion does not have to sit in the amount they fund upfront. It makes the remaining project cost easier to plan around.

The advance is an Advanced Ductless payment arrangement; program pre-approval is separate from the eventual rebate payment. Financing depends on lender approval and terms. We explain the rebate deduction and financing options in the proposal.

The installation

What did the finished installation look like?

With the design and rebate pre-approval in place, our team completed the installation in one day. The project photos show the indoor units, the outdoor equipment, and the work in between.

In the owner’s words

What did the owner say?

The owner described the new mini-splits as a relief for the small space and highlighted the clear explanations throughout the project.

Finding a contractor
The owner learned about Mass Save® from another business owner, explored options with ChatGPT, and contacted Advanced Ductless after it appeared among the options.
The new system
“It’s such a relief.”
Seeing the design first
“First time, Vinny came by and showed me how it would look. It ended up looking exactly like that.”
Communication and recommendation
“Communication wise, very clear and everything. It’s been great. So I would definitely recommend you guys.”

The result

What changed for Wally’s?

The owner was happy with the new system, the communication, and an installation that matched the design preview. For the people behind the counter and those stopping in for ice cream, a comfortable shop was the goal from the beginning.

Lower energy costs are another goal of the upgrade. We are not reporting measured bill savings yet. Winter costs depend on the previous heating system, weather, energy prices, and how the heat pumps are used; operating history will tell that part of the story.

From the first search to the finished shop

A ChatGPT search led Wally’s to Advanced Ductless. An on-site assessment and 3D preview made the plan clear. Pre-approval came before installation, and the installation took one day. The owner’s verdict: clear communication and a result that matched the proposal.

Questions from other business owners

Where was this heat pump project installed?

At Wally’s Wicked Good Ice Cream & Treats in Auburndale, a village of Newton, Massachusetts. Advanced Ductless serves Newton from its Randolph office.

How does the Advanced Ductless rebate advance work?

After rebate pre-approval, Advanced Ductless deducts the approved rebate amount from the total project cost. The remaining balance can be submitted for financing, subject to lender approval and applicable terms. This is an Advanced Ductless payment arrangement; pre-approval is not the same as a rebate payment from Mass Save®.

Was the entire project completed in one day?

The installation at Wally’s was completed in one day. The assessment, measurements, heat-load calculation, 3D design review, and rebate pre-approval happened beforehand. Other installation schedules depend on the space and scope of work.

Has Wally’s measured lower energy bills yet?

No measured before-and-after savings are reported in this case study. The owner described improved comfort and relief from the old system. Energy costs, including winter costs, depend on the previous heating system, weather, utility rates, and how the heat pumps are used.

Advanced Ductless designed and installed this system. Project details come from our project account, original job photos and video, and the customer interview. Rebate advance terms were confirmed by Advanced Ductless on September 21, 2026.
